me:
Shwayze, "Buzzin'"
Such a hot single.
(though I elected to go to a reading at the U of A and Congress instead of the Shwayze show at the Rialto. Did anyone go? How was it?)
I'm at the UA Poetry Center right this moment, so I am listening to library silence. And air conditioning. But in my head, I am listening to Superchunk. Yesterday and Monday I listened to Jimmy Eat World because Jim Adkin's great but low-key solo set at the Rialto on Saturday made me want to listen to the loud album versions of the songs.
I am listening to the new release by German Electronic band Rotersand, their "I cry" e.p. is amazing stuff! Rotersand has been excellent right from their beginning days! Out on Metropolis records, one of America's only labels besides D.S.B.P. Records specializing in Electro and Industrial music. Rotersand mixes 80's elements like old Front 242, with newer Electro like Covenant, VNV Nation, E-Craft, and even puts a Trance Techno shine over it all! One of the most catchy powerful dance bands out there right now, who are very sought after for their remix talents! I listen to thousands of bands, but Rotersand is in my top 5, they are that good!
Here's yet another link to some great indie artist radio. Scrub Radio. Not just rock, but many other genres... check the schedule for live programming.
I have been listening almost daily to the new cd "A greater good" by Neuroticfish. It is a best of history comp covering the years 1998-2008 It is also a "Goodbye" cd for Neuroticfish... one man band Sasha Mario Klein announced earlier this year that he is calling it quits! Too bad, his amazing music will be sorely missed! Neuroticfish was one of Germany's absolute best of its many bands playing Electronic music! He played a style that could be called Synth-Pop, but it was also very heavy and thumpy powerful music with lyrics that immediately pull you in! Every song is a winner, very emotional catchy songs that stick in your head for years! On another earlier cd he even does a cover of "They're coming to take me away" and a cover by the Smiths, both done electro style! It is a shame music this good is not all over the Radio instead of having to suffer under terrible 70's music like what most stations in town play! What happened to Tucson Radio...?
Today i am listening to old-school music from a fondly remembered band from my youth.... I am listening to The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Their live concert lp they did in 1975 is truly one of the all time best live lps ever done, certainly of the 70's! It ranks up there with Live at Leeds by the Who!! They were one of the most amazing unique bands to ever come out of Scotland, their legions of fans will never tire of them! Alex Harvey was an older rocker than most, he was about the same age as Elvis, starting his long career in the late 50's... he did the circuit tours in the 60's playing Military bases in the U.K. and Europe. When that fizzled out he advertised for a new band in the beginning of the 70's and a Scottish band named Teargas became his "Sensational Band" By that time Alex was already over 40, but he rocked like someone years younger! He had a very thick Scotch Brogue, that would take a buzz-saw to hack through! He had a very bizzare, abstract funny sense of humour and wit that showed up in their look and lyrics! The band dressed in Pirate coats, and knee britches, and their amazing Guitarist Zal Cleminson, dressed in a green Harelquin costume, and painted his face like a mime!
They were known for classic tracks like "Faithhealer" "Next" "Vambo" "Give my compliments to the chef" "Action Strasse" "Tomahawk Kid" "Giddy up a ding-dong" "and There's no lights on the Christmas tree mother, they're burning big Louie tonight" They even covered Irving Berlin's "Dancing cheek to cheek" and Tom Jones' "Delilah" They could stop and turn on a dime and go from a song that sounded like a Barn-dance romp in one verse to another that sounded as heavy as Led Zeppelin or Nazareth! The next song would sound like a Scotch Frank Zappa Freak-out or even a 1940's Benny Goodman style song about Marvel Comics Character SGT. Fury.... how's that for originality....? Few bands then or now can come close to the Genius he displayed in his songs, i can only compare them to maybe Alice Cooper meets Nazareth, meets Zappa-weirdness!!! Weirdness is said to be where Genius starts, i don't doubt that at all when it comes to Alex Harvey! I will take his weird wonderful music over the total crap played on most Radio stations any day! Sadly, Alex passed away sometime in 1983, but his music will stand the test of time for decades to come! Look for footage of them on Youtube, very cool stuff! Robert Smith of the Cure and Joe Strummer and Paul Simenon of the Clash were big fans as teenagers..........
