Event Description

The Five Deadly Venoms - Killer Bluegrass from NYC Strikes Tubac!
On Saturday, July 11 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M get your dancin’ shoes on and get ready for five fine gentlemen to bring you the baddest bluegrass coming to town that can only be described as “killer”! The Five Deadly Venoms have quickly and rightfully earned a reputation at the top of New York City’s vibrant bluegrass scene. Their top-notch musicianship complemented by smooth-as-butter vocal harmonies will take you right to the roots of bluegrass music.

Named after the classic Kung-Fu film by Chang Cheh, The Five Deadly Venoms are truly dangerous! With a line-up of first-call instrumentalists and award-winning pickers they carve a fresh, exciting and unique vision of American acoustic and bluegrass music with a sound that is soulful and sincere, adventurous with respect for tradition, playful and serious all at the same time.

This quintessential quintet is: Elio Schiavo on mandolin and vocals, talented singer/musician/songwriter/producer and first-call player in New York City's exploding Bluegrass scene; Rick Snell on guitar and vocals with a varied repertoire including a BFA in Jazz guitar and his skills as an Irish “picker” performing in Celtic festivals throughout the US; Rob Hecht tearing it up on fiddle for the last 17 years raised on a steady diet of Bluegrass and Country music; James Kerr on Dobro and Vocals, formally trained and experienced in performances with some of the best - Mike Gordon (Phish), Michael Travis (String Cheese Incident), Jazz great Gene Bertoncini, and others; and Ian M. Riggs, bringing home the bottom end on stand-up bass with a diverse musical career as both bassist and composer/arranger in New York City who, in addition to his many live performances with various outstanding ensembles, appeared on television in 2004 playing with the band Gaelic Storm (Irish band featured in the film Titanic).

Having just finished mixing their debut album with 3-time Grammy award-winning engineer, Dave Sinko in Nashville, TN, the band is celebrating with a coast to coast U.S. tour that will land them for a grand finale in Colorado where The Five Deadly Venoms dig their picks into bluegrass music's two biggest Battle of the Bands competitions - the Telluride and Rocky Grass Bluegrass Festivals. Past winners The Dixie Chicks and Nickel Creek launched their careers from these same competitions, which are judged according to rigorous professional standards. Songwriting, instrumental ability, vocal style and harmony are just a few of the areas of virtuosity found in any strong bluegrass outfit. Though humble in attitude, it’s clear The Venoms are poised and ready to strike out onto the big time bluegrass scene. So come on out on July 11th and judge for yourself!

The concert takes place at the Tubac Plaza Main Stage next to the Out Of The Way Galleria at 29 Tubac Plaza in Tubac, Arizona. All ages welcome. ADMISSION FEE: $15- Proceeds to benefit teen & young adult rehabilitation programs and Avalon Gardens internships of Global Community Communications Alliance.
